Letter to Suzanne Spira

This is a letter I wrote to Suzanne (John’s almost ex wife) shortly after a telephone conversation I had with her. The letter is dated 11/20/10 and was sent on the back of John’s missing poster. Here it is:

I’ve thought a lot about our conversation a few weeks ago and I gotta say it only served to convince me further that you know what happened. You said that you will deny any involvement for the rest of your life. Ok, then I have a proposition.

I will set up and pay for a polygraph exam and post the results on the website as well as share them with DuPage County. If you’re as innocent as you say, this should not be a problem. I’m innocent. I would take a polygraph on that in a second. You should feel the same way. Frankly, I can’t understand why you, and Dave, have refused to take the exams offered by Dupage County. You know they’re not admissible in court. Why not take the test so we can stop focusing on you? When you pass, we will be able to move on and look at other theories. But your past refusals, your flight to N.Y., your failure to post posters, conduct searches, talk to media or do anything whatsoever to help, points only to your guilt. If you pass the test, which you will if you’re as innocent as you proclaim, my family and I could believe you.

If you fail to respond to this offer or if you respond and refuse, I will also post that on [this] website, which because of the Disappeared show gets hits constantly. I have received hundreds of emails, each asserting the same thing…it was you and Dave.

Please call my cell at…..to discuss this. Take the test so we can ALL move forward. You have until 12/10/10 to respond. If no response you will see this letter on the website….

I am looking forward to hearing from you and getting this test done. I really want to believe you Suzanne.

    We absolutely thought that there may be some connection to the “almost ex-wife” and this confirms it for us. We kept wondering why the heck isnt the police interrogating her??!! We also support your search for John and pray that he is found. We thought the cop on the show “disappeared” seemed to not really care and probably off-camera treats you poorly, as if this doesn’t matter to him. Which brought up this thought, is Suzanne somehow connected with city officials, police, fire, etc? With all the technology out there “all of a sudden” they can’t find the cause of the fire… HIGHLY DOUBT IT. If it smells like a skunk, it probably is.

    I absolutely agree with your assertion. I remember seeing the spot on “Disappeared” and I thought then that her actions were way suspicious. I have helped in a number of missing person cases including missing juveniles and I have done it willingly. In all the cases they were not family members or someone I even knew but that didn’t stop me from passing out fliers, spreading the word, and doing what I could to help the family.

    Further, I firmly believe that people just don’t disappear on their own and very rarely is a stranger behind it all. These people know something and they have gotten away with this crime. It could be bad police work (and don’t let the local DA off the hook) or many other factors that have kept this from being solved. I have learned that if someone – besides family, friends, supporters – from law enforcement, the elected officials in the community or someone with a little power puts their hearts into things can get done.

    Suzanne’s daughter murdered her boyfriend. Is she out? Or perhaps the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree? Suzanne definitely has something to do with John’s disappearance. Why else hasn’t she taken a polygraph? Only a guilty person refuses to do so.

  4. Alex says:

    So sorry to learn of your brother’s missing status. I hope the show helps in finding him. It seems rather strange that his wife will not assist in the search. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she is involved (directly or indirectly) in your brother’s disappearance. Do not stop looking for him. My prayers are with you, your brother, and your family!

  5. Mary Evans says:

    I just finished watching the Disappeared episode. I pray that you will find what happened to John. It seemed that the investigator was not as passionate about the case as he should be. He looked as if he was tired of messing with it. There should be another investigator assigned to help find what happened. I don’t know who “Dave ” is but the “almost ex-wife” is abviously involved. I would guess she got everything now that John has been gone so long. The investigor never really looked in to her like he should have. I wish I had more than an opinion to give you and I will pray that your family will have closure soon. God Bless!

    i am wondering why the family wont put up another banner and do a stake out to see who is tearing them down, i can almost guarantee they have something to do with the disappearance. maybe the wife had insurance on john or the business. i pray for your family and hope you all find peace and bring mr john spira home. sometimes when someone disappears it is wise to check the closest family member (usually the wife) good luck.

  7. Eddy says:

    Absolutely Suzanne and the business partner are involved. Anybody in their right mind who is innocent would not hesitate to do the polygraph test. Even if they felt offended by the implication of guilt they would still take it! They’d do it if they had any sort of caring for John, you, or the rest of the Spira family.

    This letter is of no help to you. I’m sorry for the entire Spira family. I just caught this episode about John on Investigation Discovery and it totally pissed me off. I cannot imagine not knowing what happened to someone I loved..family or friend. Even though by now you suspect he’s gone there is no closure and it’s got to be the worst thing in the world!?

    If by some chance Suzanne ever visits here than you grab up Dave and the both of you get your asses down to the police and have that polygraph test done and give this family at least that much peace! It’s a complete disregard to them and to John. If you ever loved him at all you would do this!

    With my deepest regards to the Spira family. God bless you all!

    Hello, I am a retired Police Officer and also watch this show regularly. When I first saw the story about John the first thing I thought was “the almost ex-wife” did something. Since I know they probably dont always report all the investigative avenues taken on the show I assumed they interviewed the “almost ex-wife” aggressively. I feel it in my gut that the ex-wife had something to do with it. I only have 1 critique. When you hung up the banner the 2nd day I wldv’e had someone out there ALL night watching to see who took it down (AND filmed it). Thats what I wldv’e done. I cant criticize the police cuz I dont know what they’ve done or who they have interviewed but I hope & pray that your family gets answers AND eventually justice! Good Luck and God Bless!

    I absoluteyly agree 100% to what Eugene (above) has said about John’s disappearance! I just saw the segment on Disappeared about John (January 17, 2010) and was extremely frustrated that more investigating was not done on his SOON TO BE ex wife, Suzzane and business partner. When watching them go over the events of the day, they said nothing out of the ordinary had happened. ABSOLUTELY IT DID! He had just settled on his divorce agreement with his wife which I’m sure his lawyer can verify. I said it out loud as soon as they stated it. Could she have hired someone to “get rid” of him? I find it really interesting that he disappeared in the parking lot. I’m sure he would not have gotten into a car with a stranger. Plus it really bothered me that she would not go to the police about a missing persons report right when his current girlfriend asked her too since they would not accept it from her. (stupid rule that it has to be the next of kin. They may not be around.) If the police had gotten busy sooner, maybe chances of finding him would have been stronger. The thought about the police involvment had occured to me too. Could she have been involved with one of them or had some kind of ties with one of them? Their lack of enthusiasm as well as them not finding a “source” of the fire being started is crap. It has always astonished me how it can be figure out how a fire has started! It really looks suspicious to us many viewers not just the family. And what about the business partner being the last person to see him. It also stated he “said goodbye” to his partner when leaving. Did he not see anything??? No car, or anything through a window….hum….

    I think it is really great what you are doing with these websites. Keeping his case alive, as well as his memory. You and your family deserve to know the truth. Such a horrible crime to have happened. I pray for your closure and truly hope one day you can find out the answers you so deserve. Even us strangers care! We want answers and justice for him too! Stay strong and please take care.

    ps. After reading your letter to his wife, I am even more suspicious! GET BUSY police.

    I just saw John’s story on Disappeared and didn’t realize until I visited this site that the “almost ex-wife” had not been interrogated or even presumed to be a suspect. The show spent very little time discussing that possibility. Now that I have read the entries on this site, I too think that she had something to do with it. A private investigator needs to root around for evidence. Also puzzling is how absolutely no one witnessed anyone taking down two giant banners in well-trafficked areas. Something like that would have to be hiding in someone’s toolshed, if not destroyed. Perhaps another banner should have been put up – with a camera feed on it.

    You are in my thoughts and I wish you all well. I cannot imagine the pain you must be feeling, but I have faith that the mystery will be solved.

  11. Jami says:

    I agree with eugene. After watching the show, I to believe the “ex-wife” is guilty. It blows my mind that with the technology we have these days that they can’t find the cause of the fire. Rest assured, those involved will have to answer for it some day. My thoughts and prayers go out to your friends and family.

  12. Steve says:

    I have an idea. Put up another poster of John on it with video servailence or have some body stake out the site to see who is tearing them down or destroying them! Then maybe you can find out why they are doing it. I doubt its kids!

  13. Susan Finfrock says:

    I watched the episode today, first off I can’t even imagine what you and John’s loved ones and friends are going through, you are all in my thoughts and prayers, my heart goes out to you. I thought almost immediately that Suzanne had to have had something to do with his diappearance, the thought was chilling especially when the roll of plastic was found to be missing from the truck. The fact that his truck was found at his workplace says to me that someone was waiting for him outside and probably took him by surprise, or maybe it was Suzanne. I have a thought, if you put up another banner couldn’t you set up a video camera to find out who is destroying them? Not that that makes them guily of anything but vandalism, but who knows? I too have thoughts of some authority figure(s) maybe somehow being involved, I don’t know why, with technology and forensics being what they are today you’d think you would have more answers than you are getting. I hope and pray that soon you get some answers, your brother seems like a wonderful man who had it all going for him.

  14. Rose says:

    The thought of not knowing what happened to a loved one is so unsettling. I am so sorry youre family and friends are suffering threw all these years. My prayers are with you all… I hope your nightmare ends soon.

  15. I have just watched this program for the second time and first of all would like to say, I cannot imagine what John’s family and friends are going through however, my heart goes out to all of you.
    I was amazed at how vague the police were on this program. They intimated that something was going on in John’s life to make him want to leave but never expressed what it was. They did not mention what his wife was awarded in the way of money and assets since his disappearance. Did John have children? They did not speak about questioning his wife or delving into her possible motive for wanting him gone.
    In honor of your brother, I suggest you might want to legislate a law wherein beneficiarys can and should be changed when a divorce is proceeding. If I understand correctly, the law says you cannot do this during a divorce. Considering most often when there is a disappearance or murder, it is almost always the husband, wife or family member who does this. I believe if they have nothing to gain, most often this would not happen. I will keep checking and hope when you find John, you will post it. Thank you and God bless all of you.

  16. Friend says:

    You did the right thing Stef, and after reading all those comments alot of people are proud of you for taking it into your own hands due to the fact the case is pretty much a coldcase in the police’s eyes, but not in yours …

    I heard a saying and I think it now applies:

    God grant me the serenity
    to accept the things I cannot change;
    courage to change the things I can;
    and wisdom to know the difference.

    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a time;
    Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
    Taking, as He did, this sinful world
    as it is, not as I would have it;
    Trusting that He will make all things right
    if I surrender to His Will;
    That I may be reasonably happy in this life
    and supremely happy with Him
    Forever in the next.
    –Reinhold Niebuhr

    Hopefully this gives you some more determination and hope:) My thoughts are with you
